| I love taking photographs.
I used to do a lot of film photography but that became a chore, I would have to carry around at least two camera bodies and three lenses around with me. Films had to be rewound and changed every 36 shot and the costs were quite high for the film and the processing, the film was bulky and occupied about a quarter of the suitcase. You could have the camera accidentally on the wrong setting and you wouldn’t find out until about a week later when it was too late to reshoot or you could have a whole et of shots ruined by a lab and the only compensation you get is free film and a credit for its processing
When the first digital cameras I didn’t get on with their electronic viewfinders at all and so I took very few photographs until I got a digital SLR where the viewfinder is very much like the ones by my film cameras. I can do almost everything I need with a single camera body and my 17-250mm lens. I don’t have to ration my picture taking and errors can be spotted and corrected as soon as the picture is taken. Digital photography is an absolute dream compared to working with film and having my gallery and the feed back from it is very encouraging.
I used to shoot colour transparencies and would only ever see my pictures properly if they were published.

| What image, Gem, makes you drop the bags, the equipment, and start clicking? |

Anything. I do stock photography so quite dull records of things can sell as well as a stunning sunset. I enjoy photographing animals but I also enjoy watching animals. In Mexico there was no real “scenery” apart from the coastline so I tried other things. Birds – if someone wants an illustration of a frigate bird there is one. People – shooting people for picture agencies can be problematic if they are clearly recognisable so I don’t often shoot them but this group was anonymous and I liked the improvised child carrier.
