LOL lol Bella, do u remember our smoking thread on the mirror with tigger and all, and she asked mods for a smoking room and i named it ciggie stardust? She was so funny, i really liked her. infact she started the thread and it went on and on and on lol. What a laugh we all had eh? spliff

I dont agree with the smoking ban, never have, but im sure this government wont be ahappy til we are all as miserable as sin and paying more and more taxes!

Pubs have closed, and the ones that are open around here are empty. The non smoking ban has hit so many trades now. I dont bother going out much, cant be arsed to keep going outside for a fag - in the summer its ok, but in the winter, brrrrrr. splosh

We have smoking bans here in the states as well. It dont bother me as im 5 years smoke free as of this month. go me! but being an ex smoker i can understand how it makes the smokers feel. I think they should have places where smoking is permitted. its not fair to both sides, if its totally smoke free.

The smoking ban is ridiculous, imposed on us like most other things by the PC brigade of killjoys. The pubs like you say are almost deserted and just about everywhere else s as well. I don't believe in what they say about passive smoking anyway and its a pity a few people don't start breaking this absurd and silly law.

You see Ska ....if you hadnt had a sneaky fag ..and just carried on

Nice To Know:

  • Within 48 hours after quitting smoking, blood pressure decreases,
pulse rate drops, body temperature of hands and feet increases, the
carbon monoxide level in the blood returns to normal, the oxygen level
in the blood increases to normal, the chance of a heart attack
decreases, nerve endings start regrowing, and the ability to taste and
    smell is increased.

Within the first year after quitting smoking circulation and lung
function increase, and coughing, sinus congestion and shortness of
breath decrease.

Ok here is my excuse for agreeing with Truthy on this.

Have you ever wondered just what pollution you breathe in on a daily basis. Wipe down your windowsill that faces the street. Then do not wipe it or clean it for a week - what you see on that windowsill is what you breathe in daily in the air and in London it is far worse. Vehicle pollution is actually far more harmful but this is kept very quiet and everyone wants to blame cigarettes.

I have quit going to bars and pubs due to the smoking ban, during summer its no issue but in winter it is not right.

At work we used to have 3 smoking cabins 1 for staff and 2 for patients and relatives, we are now down to one tiny little shelter that seats 3 for the entire hospital. Staff are expected to walk halfway down the road for nicotine - sod that!

Yes but cigerettes have 43 KNOWN lung cancer chemicals in them ....

Alot of my relatives have died from lung cancer ...and i would have to say
that it is the worst of all the cancer's to die from ...the loss of weight ...the
gasping for breath ...not being able to breathe properly ...the list is endless

Personally im pleased the government has finally made a stand against
smokers and smoking ....but that's just my opinion

what about petrol fumes that also kills Star, how many chemicals are in the fumes that pollute the planet and kill many with asthma.

what about all the chemicals in our food's that cause cancer, you don't need to smoke to catch cancer.

should we just stop and ban everything ? if smoking is so bad why not make it illegal ? as we know money comes before human health.

At the end of the day the banning of smoking in public pubs has not worked and is putting a whole industry to collapse at a big cost on the government, if they had just started the public houses smoking and non smoking we would have had no problems and Star would of been able to go into a non smoking pub without washing her hair afterwards, the way it is going Star you wont have many pubs to go to soon Very Happy

Some initial facts and figures

About 106,000
people in the UK die each year due to smoking. Smoking-related deaths
are mainly due to cancers, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
and heart disease.

About half of all smokers die from
smoking-related diseases. If you are a long-term smoker, on average,
your life expectancy is about 10 years less than a non-smoker. Put
another way, in the UK about 8 in 10 non-smokers live past the age of
70, but only about half of long-term smokers live past 70. The younger
you are when you start smoking, the more likely you are to smoke for
longer and to die early from smoking.

Many smoking-related
deaths are not 'quick deaths'. For example, if you develop COPD you can
expect several years of illness and distressing symptoms before you die.

Smoking
increases the risk of developing a number of other diseases (listed
below). Many of these may not be fatal, but they can cause years of
unpleasant symptoms.

The good news is:

  • Stopping
smoking can make a big difference to your health. It is never too late
to stop smoking to greatly benefit your health. For example, if you
stop smoking in middle age, before having cancer or some other serious
disease, you avoid most of the increased risk of death due to smoking.
  • Many people have given up smoking. In 1972 just under half of
adults in the UK were smokers. By 1990 this had fallen to just under a
third. At present, just over a quarter of UK adults are smokers.
  • Help is available if you want to stop smoking but are finding it difficult.

Cigarette smoke contains the following

Nicotine

Nicotine is a drug that stimulates
the brain. If you are a regular smoker, when the blood level of
nicotine falls, you usually develop withdrawal symptoms such as
craving, anxiety, restlessness, headaches, irritability, hunger,
difficulty with concentration, or just feeling awful. These symptoms
are relieved by the next cigarette.

So, most smokers need to smoke regularly to feel 'normal', and to prevent nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
Tar which contains many chemicals

These
deposit in the lungs and can get into the blood vessels and be carried
to other parts of the body. Cigarette smoke contains over 4000
chemicals, including over 50 known carcinogens (causes of cancer) and
other poisons.
Carbon monoxide

This chemical affects the
oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. In particular, in pregnant women
who smoke, this causes a reduced amount of oxygen to get to the growing
baby. This is thought to be the most important cause for the bad
effects of smoking on the growing baby.
Which diseases are caused or made worse by smoking?

  • Lung cancer. About 30,000 people in the UK die from lung cancer each year. More than 8 in 10 cases are directly related to smoking.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). About 25,000
people in the UK die each year from this serious lung disease. More
than 8 in 10 of these deaths are directly linked to smoking. People who
die of COPD are usually quite unwell for several years before they die.
  • Heart disease is the biggest killer illness in the UK. About
120,000 people in the UK die each year from heart disease. About 1 in 7
of these deaths are due to smoking.
  • Other cancers - of the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, gullet
(oesophagus), pancreas, bladder, cervix, blood (leukaemia), and kidney
are all more common in smokers.
  • Circulation. The chemicals in tobacco can damage the lining
of the blood vessels and affect the level of lipids (fats) in the
bloodstream. This increases the risk of atheroma forming (sometimes
called 'hardening' of the arteries). Atheroma is the main cause of
heart disease. It is also the main cause of strokes, peripheral
vascular disease (poor circulation of the legs), and aneurysms (swollen
arteries which can burst causing internal bleeding). All of these
atheroma-related diseases are more common in smokers.
  • Sexual problems. Smokers are more likely than non-smokers to
become impotent or have difficulty in maintaining an erection in middle
life. This is thought to be due to smoking-related damage of the the
    blood vessels to the penis.
  • Ageing. Smokers tend to develop more 'lines' on their face
at an earlier age than non-smokers. This often makes smokers look older
    than they really are.
  • Fertility is reduced in smokers (both male and female).
  • Menopause. On average, women who smoke have a menopause nearly two years earlier than non-smokers.
  • Other conditions where smoking often causes worse symptoms
include: asthma, colds, flu, chest infections, tuberculosis, chronic
rhinitis, diabetic retinopathy, hyperthyroidism, multiple sclerosis,
    optic neuritis, and Crohn's disease.
  • Smoking increases the risk of developing various other conditions
including: optic neuropathy, cataract, macular degeneration,
cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis, psoriasis, gum disease, tooth loss,
    osteoporosis and Raynaud's phenomenon.
